Welcome to the 2020-21 NHL Season! The Flames will be playing their season opener tonight against North Division rivals the Winnipeg Jets at 6:00 PM MT. The last time these two teams met was in the qualifying round of the 2020 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The Flames came out victorious and took the series in 4 games. The Flames had stellar goaltending from former Flame Cam Talbot as he posted a .945 sv% and 1.51 GAA. The Flames had a slightly easier road to victory in this series due to Jets stars Patrik Laine and Mark Scheifele being out due to injuries they suffered in Game one of the series. Players like Matthew Tkachuk, Dillon Dube, Andrew Mangiapane and Sam Bennett, were massive factors in swinging some games in the Flames’ favour.
It’ll be a good game as both teams are looking to start hot this season after early exits from the post season last year. The Jets had the upper hand in the season series last year, winning the only meeting of the two Canadian clubs before the Covid 19 pandemic placed the season on hold. The Jets won that one 2-1 in overtime. Despite the loss it was a game to remember for us Flames fans due to the nature of the Heritage Classic.
PLAYER TO WATCH
My player to watch for the game will be Andrew Mangiapane. The Bread man proved himself to be a regular on the Flames squad and an integral part of the team’s core. Mang had 32 points (17 goals and 15 assists) in 68 games played last season. The line of Chucky Backs and Mang was one of the Flames best lines in the Playoffs as well as in the regular season. I see him having a massive role in the game tonight and I won't be surprised if he is a factor on the scoreboard by the end of the night. Will definitely be a treat to watch Eat Bread in a larger role throughout this season.
To wrap things up, I think this’ll be a good game for both teams as the two teams look to prove that they’re one of the top 4 teams in the North Division (Should’ve been called the All Canadian Division). Go Flames!
